Josiah Strong

Occupation:
Clergyman in the Protestant church, author, General Secretary of the American Evangelical Alliance, founder of the League for Social Services, editor of The Gospel of the Kingdom, and founder of the British Institute of Social Services.

Position on the Issue:
I am strongly in favor of the imperialism of the American foreign policy. In my book Our Country: Its Possible Future and Present Crisis, I discuss the fact that the Anglo-Saxon race needs to “Christianize” the world. Overseas is full souls to harvest, we have the responsibility to save the souls of all those that have not come in contact with the Christian religion. The Filipino people need our help, they need us to civilize them and save them with our religion.

Reasons for Interest:
We are the superior race, so we should help those that are less privileged. “The Anglo-Saxon race would speedily decay but for the salt of Christianity. Bring savages into contact with our civilization…while years are necessary to render effective the saving influences of Christian instruction…Where there is one missionary, there are hundreds of miners or traders or adventurers ready to debauch the native.” America needs to expand its sphere of influence and affect the world. It is our duty, as Christians with power and opportunity, to save the world from sin and bring them to our great religion. The Filipinos are no exception, we need to help them because it is the moral thing for us to do as a nation in our powerful position. “Thus, while on this continent God is training the Anglo-Saxon race for its mission…he is preparing mankind to receive our impress.”
